Beginner's Guide to Quilting Flannel

What Is Flannel, Exactly?
Flannel is a soft, loosely woven fabric — usually 100% cotton — that's been "brushed" on one or both sides to raise the fibers. That brushing creates the signature fuzzy, napped texture that makes flannel so warm and cozy.
That same softness is what makes flannel wonderful to use and a little tricky to sew. Because it's more loosely woven and has a bit more give than standard quilting cotton, flannel calls for a slightly gentler approach. Master a few basics, though, and it's a dream to work with.
Tip #1: Always, Always Prewash
If you remember just one thing from this guide, make it this: flannel shrinks — a lot. It can shrink significantly more than regular quilting cotton, and different flannels shrink at different rates. If you skip prewashing and combine flannel with other fabrics (or even other flannels), you can end up with a puckered, distorted quilt after its first wash.
How to prewash flannel:
- Wash in warm water and dry on your normal dryer setting — this lets the shrinking happen before you cut
- Wash flannel separately the first time (it produces a LOT of lint!)
- Clean your lint trap afterward — trust us on this one
- Press well before cutting so you're working with smooth, stable fabric
Prewashing is the single most important step to a flannel project that stays beautiful wash after wash.
Tip #2: Handle With Care
Flannel has a looser weave, which means it can stretch and fray more easily than quilting cotton — especially along the bias (the diagonal). A little gentleness goes a long way:
- Avoid tugging or pulling as you piece
- Handle cut pieces as little as possible to prevent stretching
- Consider starching your fabric before cutting for extra stability
- Cut with a sharp rotary blade for clean, accurate edges
Tip #3: Keep Your Piecing Simple
Because flannel is thicker and a bit stretchier, it shines brightest in simple, beginner-friendly designs. Save the tiny, intricate piecing for your quilting cottons and let flannel do what it does best — cozy, comfy, larger-scale blocks.
Great flannel-friendly patterns include:
- Large squares and simple patchwork
- Strip quilts and rail fence designs
- Big half-square triangles
- Easy, chunky blocks with fewer seams
Fewer, larger pieces mean less bulk at the seams and a smoother, snugglier finished quilt.
Tip #4: Mind the Bulk & Your Seams
All that cozy thickness adds up! When multiple flannel seams meet, they can get bulky fast. To keep things tidy:
- Use an accurate ¼" seam allowance
- Press seams open to distribute bulk (rather than to one side)
- Press gently with steam — but avoid overworking the fabric, which can stretch it
- A walking foot helps feed the layers evenly and prevents shifting
Tip #5: Choose the Right Tools
A few simple adjustments will make sewing flannel smoother:
- Needle: A fresh 80/12 universal or quilting needle works well
Stitch length: Slightly longer (around 2.5–3.0mm) handles the thicker fabric nicely - Walking foot: Highly recommended for even feeding when quilting the layers
- Lint brush: Keep one handy — flannel sheds, so clean your machine often!
Tip #6: Think About Batting & Backing
Flannel is already warm, so consider how cozy you want your finished quilt to be. A lightweight batting keeps a flannel quilt from becoming too heavy, while flannel backing (yes, you can back a quilt in flannel!) makes for an ultra-snuggly, double-sided throw. Just remember to prewash your flannel backing too!
